The French “talent” multi-year residence permit (carte de séjour pluriannuelle « talent », formerly the “Talent Passport”) is designed for non-EU nationals who bring skills, capital or international renown to France. It is valid for up to four years, allows its holder to work in the activity for which it was issued, and gives the family a fast-track residence right.
The categories were reorganised by the 2024 immigration reform. This overview, updated in November 2026 from the official information on service-public.fr, gives you the current conditions for each category.
Card or visa?
- If you plan to stay one year or more, you need a talent residence card.
- If your stay is shorter than one year, a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit (VLS-TS) marked “talent” is sufficient.
The categories and their 2026 thresholds
Talent – skilled employee
Three tracks: skilled employee (Master’s degree obtained in France), employee of an innovative company, and employee on intra-group assignment. Minimum gross annual salary: €39,582. See our detailed guide: Talent Residence Permit “Skilled Employee” in France (2026).
Talent – EU Blue Card
Degree sanctioning at least three years of higher education, or five years of comparable professional experience (three years for certain professions); employment contract of at least six months; gross annual salary of at least €59,373. See: EU Blue Card in France (2026).
Talent – medical and pharmacy professions
Authorisation to practise under the French Public Health Code and gross annual remuneration of at least €41,386.48.
Talent – researcher
Master’s-level degree, research or university teaching activity, and a hosting agreement (convention d’accueil) signed with an approved public or private organisation. A minimum gross salary of €2,200 applies to researchers who have signed a research stay agreement.
Talent – project holder (porteur de projet)
Three tracks:
- Business creation: Master’s-level degree or five years of comparable experience, a real and serious business project, funding of at least €30,000, and personal resources at least equal to the full-time gross annual minimum wage (€22,404.20);
- Innovative economic project: a project recognised by the Ministry of the Economy and resources at least equal to the minimum wage;
- Direct economic investment: investment of at least €300,000 in tangible or intangible assets in France, personally or through a company you manage or in which you hold at least 30% of the capital, and creation or preservation of jobs.
Talent – corporate officer (mandataire social)
Legal representative of an establishment or company in France, at least three months’ prior work in the same group, and gross annual remuneration of at least three times the minimum wage, i.e. €67,212.60.
Talent – artistic and cultural profession
Performing artists and authors of literary or artistic works with resources of at least 70% of the full-time minimum wage per month of stay (€1,306.91), at least 51% of which comes from the artistic activity.
Talent – national or international renown
Established renown, or the ability to contribute significantly and durably to France’s economic development or international standing, in a scientific, literary, artistic, intellectual, educational or sporting field. Resources at least equal to the gross annual minimum wage (€22,404.20).
Talent – family
The spouse and minor children of a talent card holder receive a “talent – family” card through the simplified “accompanying family” procedure, without going through family reunification.
Validity
The card is issued for the duration of the contract or project, up to four years. For the EU Blue Card, if the contract lasts less than two years, the card covers the contract plus three months, up to two years.
Cost
If the card is granted, service-public.fr indicates a total of €350 in tax stamps (€50 stamp duty + €300 tax).
Where to apply
- From abroad: visa application at the French consulate, then validation of the VLS-TS online, or application for the card on the ANEF platform after arrival.
- From France: online application on ANEF, within two months of entry with a long-stay visa, or between four and two months before your current permit expires. Applications for the medical and pharmacy category are still filed with the prefecture.
What changed on 30 October 2026
Decree no. 2026-1001 of 26 October 2026 shortened several processing deadlines (the general implicit-refusal deadline falls from four months to 90 days from a complete application), adapted the rules on the EU Blue Card (intra-EU mobility, job search after loss of employment) and added a salary condition for ICT permits. The official pages are still being updated: always have the applicable rules checked for your file.
Our advice
The choice of category is strategic. The same profile can sometimes qualify for several cards, with very different consequences for the salary required, the documents, the family and the renewal. Before filing, check that your diploma, contract, salary and project are fully consistent: this is where most refusals originate.
