One of the main advantages of the French talent residence permits is the treatment of the family. The spouse and minor children of the holder do not have to go through the long family reunification procedure: they benefit from a simplified “accompanying family” procedure and receive a “talent – family” multi-year residence permit.
Who is concerned?
The “accompanying family” includes:
- your spouse;
- your minor children.
The procedure applies to the family of holders of the main talent cards: skilled employee, EU Blue Card, researcher, project holder, corporate officer, artistic profession and national or international renown.
Why it matters
Family reunification normally requires a period of prior residence, minimum resources, suitable housing and an investigation by the OFII and the town hall. With the talent – family procedure, the family can come to France for the duration of the principal holder’s stay, without these prior conditions.
What the card allows
The talent – family card is issued as of right: no diploma, salary or qualification condition applies to the spouse. It is a multi-year card aligned with the principal holder’s card (if the talent card is valid for four years, so is the spouse’s card).
It also serves as a work authorisation: the holder can carry out any salaried or self-employed activity, with no geographical or sectoral restriction. The employer simply checks the validity of the residence permit. This is a decisive argument for international recruitment.
The procedure
- Family members living abroad apply for a long-stay visa at the French consulate of their country of residence, with proof of the family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificates of the children) and of the principal holder’s talent status. The visa must mention the “talent – family” purpose: entering France on a short-stay visa does not, in principle, give access to this favourable regime.
- Family members already in France with a long-stay visa apply for their residence card on the ANEF platform or with the prefecture, depending on the instructions in force.
Civil status documents must be recent and, where necessary, legalised or apostilled and translated by a sworn translator. Inconsistencies in civil status records are among the most frequent causes of delays and refusals.
Points to watch
- The family’s right of residence depends on the principal holder’s: a change of situation (loss of job, change of category, non-renewal) has direct consequences for the family.
- A separation or the end of married life can affect the spouse’s right of residence.
- Keep validity dates consistent and observe renewal deadlines for every family member.
- A spouse who wishes to obtain an independent status (for example as an employee or entrepreneur) can, under certain conditions, apply for a change of status.
